Annual awards from the Botsis Foundation

Athens - 04/06/2002 We journalists, usually writing alone in our offices, can become celebrities for one unforgettable day, for one big event, when the spotlight falls on us in the front row of a large auditorium like the one at the Caravel Hotel on April 3. The Botsis Foundation’s annual award of journalism prizes is a significant event. Present were parliamentary speaker Apostolis Kaklamanis, former premier Giorgos Rallis, opposition leader Costas Karamanlis. Press Minister Christos Protopappas, publishers, managers, colleagues and, most important of all, Greek President Costis Stephanopoulos, who is an avid newspaper reader. One of this year’s crop of prizes went to Kathimerini, which took the Equality of the Sexes Prize, awarded for the first time and funded by the General Secretariat for Equality. Effi Bekou of the secretariat handed the award to Tassoula Karaiskaki, Dora Antoniou, Fotini Kalliri and Stavros Tzimas. Stephanopoulos offered his warm congratulations for the team’s investigation of the exploitation of foreign women. One of the many Botsis awards went to Takis Michas for his disclosure of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic’s secret bank accounts in Greece.
