Cyril of Skythopolis

A Study in Hagiography as Apology
Περιγραφή

Cyril of Scythopolis, a hagiographer of the sixth century, wrote the Lives of Saints Euthymios and Saba and other Fathers of Palestinian monasticism. This book looks beyond his hagiographic needs to the apologetic concerns which have also shaped his work. First, Cyril's attitudes to his monastery and province and ecclesiastical leaders and members of the imperial circle are isolated and identified. This his theological position, as a representative of the Orthodoxy of the period, is analyzed, both through his positive doctrinal statements and his criticism of heresies. The apologetic program thus identified can be seen to underpin the form and content of the text.
