 The Society's Charter

The Hellenic Literature Society is a non-profit organization incorporated in the state of New Jersey, USA. It is administered entirely by volunteers and it is funded by the voluntary and tax deductible contributions of its supporters. The society is also being actively supported by the USA and the New Jersey Councils of the Arts, publishers in Greece, in the United Kingdom, and in the USA and other Hellenic organizations of the Diaspora. The Society's charter is to foster the translation into English and the reading of books of Greek literature and culture and to disseminate, worldwide, Greek literary and cultural information.

 Activities

• Organize Greek literary and cultural events throughout North America, e.g. book exhibits, lectures and readings, new book presentations etc.
• Endow public and private libraries with Greek subject matter books, and books by Greek authors.
• Assist authors of Greek heritage to publish their manuscripts.
• Publish “Greece In Print,” a monthly literary review of Greek literature and culture, which is distributed free of charge to academic institutions
• Administer the Greece In Print website through which member publishers and other vendors can make available worldwide Greek literary and cultural products at the lowest possible prices.
• Assist libraries to obtain Greek publications for their collections.
• Finance translations into English and the publication of Greek literary works.
• Promote in the publication of Greek literary works in the USA.

Membership

Membership in the Hellenic Literature Society is free of charge. The Society currently has over 15,000 members and 27,000 associate members in 42 countries around the world. The membership consists of: 8% university departments, 39% general readership, 27% university students, 16% libraries, 5% organizations, 4% institutions, 4% publishers, 3% authors and literary agents, and 2% schools.

“GREECE IN PRINT” Book Exhibits

The first annual book exhibit of Greek literature and culture took place in New York City in September 1996. At this event the Society exhibited over 1,500 titles provided by 117 publishers from around the world. Over 1,800 people visited this event. In addition to the book exhibit, there was an exhibit of Greek traditional costumes. Also, the Jewish community of New York participated exhibiting a photographic collection of the Jews of Greece and the Holocaust in Thessaloniki. During the event, noted authors and scholars from Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, New York, Brown, Cornell and other universities conducted 13 discussion panels on Greek literature. The 1996 exhibit took place at the United Federation of Teachers Headquarters provided by the City of New York. As a result of this exhibit the Hellenic Literature Society was able to donate over $22,000 worth of books to various public and School libraries in North America.

The second annual book exhibit took place at New York University, in September 1997, in conjuction with New York Is Book Country festivities of the City of New York. In this event the Society exhibited over 1,700 titles provided by 138 publishers from around the world. There were 13 discussion panels on Greek literary subjects and photographic exhibits on Magna Graecia and the destruction of Smyrna. The Italian community also participated in the 1997 by supporting the events on “Magna Graecia.” Noted Greek restaurants presented to the public samples of Greek cooking and estate wines from Greece. $24,000 worth of books was donated to libraries in North America.

The third annual book exhibit took place at New York University, in September 1998, in conjunction with New York Is Book Country festivities of the City of New York, and in Boston at the Maliotis Cultural Center, in October 1998. In conduction with “Boston, Hellenic Cultural Capital of America” festivities organized by SAE (organization of Greeks Abroad). In these events the Society exhibited over 2,000 titles provided by 146 publishers from around the world. There were 13 discussion panels on Greek literary subjects a photographic, and an art exhibit. Keynote speakers were: Christopher Hitchens, Patricia Storace, and Monteagle Stearns. Special guest: the Russian poet Yevgeni Yevtushenko. Noted Greek restaurants presented to the public samples of Greek cooking and estate wines from Greece. $21,000 worth of books was donated to libraries in North America.

The fourth annual book exhibit took place at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA in April 8, 2000. In this events the Society exhibited over 800 titles provided by 112 publishers from around the world. There were 6 discussion panels on Greek literary subjects and a photographic. Special guest, Edmund Keeley from Princeton University. Noted Greek restaurants presented to the public samples of Greek cooking and estate wines from Greece. $14,000 worth of books was donated to libraries in North America.

Since then, book exhibits and literary workshops are organized each year in various cities in North America.

Inform North American libraries and publishers of award winning and best sellers in Greek literature published in Greece and other countries.

Funded, together with the Stavros S. Niarchos Foundation, the publication of Greek literary works.

Supports and seeks translations of Greek literary works in the English language and their publication in the series “Modern Greek Literature Library.”
