The book is aimed at adults who have just begun studying Modern Greek. Its primary objective is to enable students to meet basic everyday communicative needs, placing particular emphasis on spoken discourse, without, however, neglecting written discourse. The book consists of 10 modules, in which different communicative circumstances are presented (introductions/greetings, traveling, social life, purchasing items, accommodation, entertainment, public services, holidays, health, etc.). Each module is made up of 4 parts: in the first one, the linguistic skills students need to practice are presented through realistic dialogues; in the second part, information regarding accent and the written transcription of phonetic phenomena is given, whereas the grammatical phenomena under examination are presented in the third part through tables and examples. The fourth part includes numerous exercises, activities and authentic material from various written texts that the teacher can employ depending on class composition and duration of the course. The book's authors are teachers at the School of Modern Greek Language, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with many years' experience teaching Greek as a second/foreign language.

Το βιβλίο αυτό απευθύνεται σε αρχάριους ενήλικες σπουδαστές της ελληνικής γλώσσας. Ο όρος "αρχάριος", βέβαια, στην πραγματικότητα της ξενόγλωσσης διδακτικής πράξης είναι αρκετά ασαφής, ιδιαίτερα στην εποχή των μεγάλων μετακινήσεων, των γλωσσικών και πολιτισμικών αναμείξεων που αυτές συνεπάγονται, και της παγκοσμιοποιημένης οικονομίας και ροής γνώσεων και πληροφοριών που διανύουμε. Έτσι η ομάδα που δηλώνεται με τον όρο "αρχάριοι" έχει δεχθεί κατηγοριοποιήσεις όπως: τελείως αρχάριοι (absolute beginners), ψευδοαρχάριοι (false beginners), αρχάριοι με ή χωρίς λατινικό αλφάβητο, αρχάριοι με ή χωρίς άλλη δεύτερη γλώσσα, αρχάριοι μόνο στο γραπτό λόγο ή αρχάριοι μόνο στον προφορικό λόγο, κ.ά.
